Barry the Bear stretches, yawns, and climbs out of his cozy den after several months of hibernation. He hasn’t eaten all winter, but he’s survived just fine by living off his body fat. Just like Barry, our ancient human ancestors lived by the rhythm of the seasons.
During a bountiful summer, they feasted on fruit and wild grains. Their insulin spiked, and their bodies happily stored fat for the coming winter. When winter arrived and food got scarce, insulin levels dropped, the storage gates closed, and their bodies switched to “fat-burning mode” to survive.
It was a beautiful, natural cycle: feast and famine, store and burn. Our bodies were designed for it.

In the modern world, it is always summer. We have supermarkets, takeout, and snacks within arm’s reach 24/7.
